How to Enable Dark Mode in 17 Popular Android & iOS Apps

Using dark mode on your phone is important for many reasons. It prolongs battery life, cuts down on eye strain, and may even be beneficial for your health. Most of the apps we use today have dark mode features, although, when we download, initially, it’ll be on the default light mode. But you can find the option to switch them to night mode.

In this article, we will show you how to enable dark mode in some of the most popular Android and iOS apps. The post contains simple steps to access this feature from the different applications. Now you won’t have to worry about straining your eyes or damaging your phone’s battery life.

Why Use Dark Mode?

Switching an app or website to night mode or dark mode essentially turns the background to black with white or grey text. This feature is especially useful for devices that have OLED displays since pixels using black color are turned off individually, resulting in less eyestrain as the level of light is reduced. Besides, it is one of the ways your phone can have a longer battery life.

You can switch your phone to dark mode through the settings. This will allow all sections of your phone and selected apps to have a dark background. You can also return to light mode anytime you want through m similar settings.

How to Enable Dark Mode In All Apps

While most smartphones and tablets have a default system setting that allows you to enable dark mode, the accessibility is still dependent on the app developer options. Therefore, before forcing all apps to use dark mode, the first thing you need to do is to enable developer mode on your device from the settings.

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to access and enable developer mode on your phone:

  • Go to your device Settings.
  • Scroll down to About phone, then select Software information (or Device identifiers as the case may be). Or you can simply type ‘build number’ from the search bar.
  • Then tap on the Build number option seven times.
  • It’ll confirm if the developer mode is turned on.

Once you activate the Developer mode, the next step is to enable the Force Dark mode setting for other apps. Follow the steps below to do this:

  • Go to your device Settings.
  • Scroll down to the Developer options menu.
  • Navigate to the hardware-accelerated rendering area.
  • Toggle on the Override Force Dark mode/force-dark* option.
  • You can also manually search for ‘force dark mode’ on the search bar from the settings.

Keep in mind that on some devices this step-by-step may be a bit different. For Xiaomi devices, for example, you’ll find that the name of this function is “Dark theme”.

How to Force Dark Mode in Use in Apps

The first step is to ensure that the developer option and dark mode are enabled on your device. This way, once dark mode is enabled, all apps, even third-party apps that do not support the night mode feature will be forced to use it.

How to Set Up Dark Mode on Popular Apps

You may not like the dark mode feature on some apps. One of the disadvantages of night mode is that it may disorient the interface or display of some apps, making it unable for you to see some details. In this case, you may need to enable the dark mode separately on the individual apps you want to have this feature. Therefore, we’ve come up with a list of some of the most popular apps you can enable dark mode on.
